Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach • Iceland Ring Road Honeymoon Trip 5
After our glacier hiking tour at Skaftafell National Park, we continued our trip towards Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach.
As usual, we headed east via route 1 ring road and along the way, we are captivated by the beauty of Vatnajökull that we could not help but to stop our car and took a few snaps!
Haha we always joked that this photo is like from some car advertisement! LOL! That’s the power of Iceland yeah, you can easily take nice photos without even post-editing!
One funny incident happened over here. We saw a herd of wild sheeps and we wanted to take a photo with them! Candyce was quite afraid of those wild mammals and asked:
Are they safe?
I assured her that they were safe as I did not see any horns on them. As we approached the herd, they started to sense our presence and lifted their heads from the bushes. It was then that I noticed that there are horns on them. We paused and had a long stare with the nearest sheep. The sheep also stared back and there was a long awkward silence. The wind was blowing strongly and it was just like the classic cowboy showdown scene. Suddenly, i shouted:
Run ah Candyce! Retreat retreat! Fall back fall back! Chiong ah! 😂😂😂😅😅😅
We ran back to our car as fast as we could and drive off towards our next targeted destination!
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
There are various ways to enjoy the beauty of this nature spectacular:
- Amphibian Boat Tour
- Short Hike to the Lagoon
We decided to take a short hike coz it is free! 😂😂😂 Upon crossing a small hill, we were awed by the scenic view!
To reach here, before you cross the bridge to check out the boat tours and diamond beach, there are few spots where you can park your car and make a short hike to see the glacier lagoon.
Nice clear blue sky reflecting on the calm water like mirror. Stunning view!
According to Nic, there should be a lot more glaciers floating around but we only have few. It might be due to the season yeah!
We found an area where we could climb further down to the water area! Now we are closer to the ice glacier. 😍😍😍
We found a small ice floating around and picked it up. It was really crystal clear!
Although Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a nature phenomenon, it was actually indirectly created by us, the humans. This lagoon is constantly getting bigger due global warming. The ice are all melting! 😭😭😭
We really could not bear to leave this place! This place is so beautiful and relaxing!
Amphibian Boat Tour
We then made our way east to check out the boat tour scene.
Over here, you will see amphibian boats driving slowly down into the lagoon.
As we didn’t take the boat tour, we climbed up a hill over there to take few more photos!
Diamond Beach
The Diamond Beach is just right opposite the cruise tour spot.
Since we missed the vik black beach on day 2, we are excited to see the equally black sands at Diamond Beach! Plus there are extra bonus!
Shiny Bright Like a Diamond!
Please imagine me singing the Rihanna’s song in a tone deaf way! LOL! 😂😂😂
The diamonds are actually referring to the glaciers that have floated into the sea from the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This is one of the photographers’ favourite spot in Iceland. The strong waves clashing into the crystal clear ‘diamonds’ create a very dramatic effect to the shot!
But since I’m a lousy photographer, I just posed with the ‘diamonds’ in my most dramatic expression! 😂😂😂
Conclusion
The previous and current posts featured attractions of Vatnajökull National Park. Other than the Golden Circle, if you have time in Iceland, this is the area that you should visit to experience the true ice of Iceland! LOL!
Check out our next post as we had our first experience of northern lights in Iceland and the lucky thing is that it was an unexpected encounter! 😱😱😱
Wonderful pictures. It looks like it was fall when you visited. The pics has this typical fall light. Am I correct? 🙂 Here is a bit of info about Jökulsárlón, the amazing glacier lake:
