Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee Very First Restaurant @ Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre!
Woohoo! After around 5 months of NOTCHBAD inception to the online world, we finally have our first media invite! 😭😭😭🎉🎉🎉 super touched
Recently, Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee has opened another new branch and it is their very first restaurant concept since the first two branches operate within kopitiams:
- #soi19amk: Blk 151 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 #01-3030
- #soi19jurongeast: Blk 130 Jurong Gateway Road #01-211
As I had reviewed about their signature thai wanton noodle, we were invited to check out this very new branch and concept!
Opens in a Ulu Place (You will know why later)
To avoid peak hours, we arrived at Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre around 10.30am. It was so ulu (deserted) that we barely see any businesses operating except for few restuarants. In fact, the number of shops seemed to be more than the number of humans within the premise! LOL! Felt like I’m in a Left4Dead map and zombies might popped out anytime! 😂😂😂💀💀💀
You might be wondering why would Soi 19 open their first restaurant in such an ulu place? We were equally curious, but you will know why later when we asked the owner.
Anyway, I was really happy to be back in Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre as this is my childhood place (you will know more later!) LOL! 😝😝😝
Soi 19 Thai Wanton Restaurant that looks like a Hipster Cafe
The shopping centre has escalators but it was not switched on when we were there in the morning and so we climbed up the flight of stairs only to realise that there are two lifts just right beside Soi 19. 😅😅😅 Okay nvm, do some exercise so can eat more! 😜😜😜
From the outside, it is not hard to miss this outlet with its huge thai wanton noodle photo that is so saliva inducing. I’m already drooling while writing this post till here. Give me a bowl of thai wanton noodle now! 😍
Before we entered, we browsed through the achievements of Soi 19. From newspaper articles to blogs to awards to celebrities. Fwah, I think we go see exhibition also never see until so detailed ah! 😂😂😂
The real reason is that we were looking for our NOTCHBAD blog post! It was written by me, but credits goes to Candyce for introducing this awesome stall to me! #DieDieMustGiveCreditsToWife 😂😂😂😂
Aiyo, no need to zoom in previous photo lah! Come, I zoom in for you! Can see? NOTCHBAD NOTCHBAD! 😆😆😆 Okay uncle, mai haolian.
Checking out their menu, hmmm, looks the same as the rest of the kopitiam branches. They also sell drinks here (#ahbuden) and we were delighted that they sell our fave thai iced milk tea! 😍😍😍
Looking at the interior design, I personally think that it should be labelled as cafe instead of restaurant. ‘Soi 19 Thai Wanton Noodle Cafe’, isn’t it sound way more cooler? Anyway, got good food can already lah! Oh btw, while waiting, MysteryLuck did a count of the chairs and concluded that this place can cater around 50pax. Oei hello MysterLuck, you want to organize your next birthday party over here is it? 😂😂😂
After deciding what to eat, I was summoned by the team to make our order! #WhyAlwaysMe 😆😆😆
While ordering, they have their pork trotters display prominently like amk branch (not sure about jurong east one) and this time, since we had more people, I can finally have a taste of this dish! 👏👏👏
While loafing around the ordering area like some creepy stalker, I noticed that this branch do not have free-flow deep fried pork lards. 😭😭😭 But do not fear, you can always ask them to put a little more. If you still want more 😱😱😱, which i think is way too sinful, you can order some of the side dishes like deep fried wantons or sausages. Both comes with pork lards. Anyway, dun eat so much pork lards yeah!
If you can’t get enough of their pork lards or chilli powder, you can buy some of them home!
NOTCHBAD team can’t wait to ‘lay their mouths’ on the dishes liao. Waiting can be a torturing game especially for food! 😤😤😤
Tadah! The foods were here! Oh mine, they look so tempting especially with our fave thai iced milk tea to complete the meal! Celebration! 🎉🎉🎉 Their thai iced milk tea is very well made, not too bland and have the right tea thickness! A must-order drink! 👍👍👍
Their Signature Thai Wanton Noodle
Their signature thai wanton noodle comes with an invisible seasoning. No matter how you stir, the color will always be the same but it will definitely give you a flavourful surprise! 酱爆！💥💥💥 Check out here for more review about this signature dish!
Come to the Dark Side!
Which side do you choose?
This time, with more stomachs, we can order the dark side. LOL! This is the alternative seasoning whereby dark soy sauce is added to have a stronger bursting flavour. The feeling was just like ordering cai tao kuey (carrot cake); sometimes I like it white, sometimes I like it black. That day, we have 2 votes for the white and 2 votes for the black. So my suggestion to you is just order both lah! 😆😆😆
Trivial: I still like the bowl that they use in amk branch as I can take the nostalgic rooster along with the noodles. At this branch, I was looking for this rooster, only to find out that it was hiding below! 😆😆😆😅😅😅😂😂😂
It’s Pork Trottering Time
This pork trotters were slowly braised in thai-style lau zhap (卤汁 braised sauce) which tasted sweeter compared to chinese style. To eat it, grab a piece of meat and top it with the collagen skin and put it together in your mouth to have the full pork trotter experience. Soft collagen with the tender meat infused with the sweet salty braised sauce! Shiok! I’m in sinful heaven! Another perfect combo is to eat it together with the garlic slice to enhance the explosive flavor! 酱爆 again! 💥💥💥
It’s Sausage Time
Okay, please pardon me for the lack of creativity in coming out with good headings! LOL! At least, I never named it as ‘It’s Sausage Party Time’! 😆😆😆
Anyway, if you are makan-ing in group, I strongly recommend this side dish. It tasted very much like taiwan sausages but yet a little bit different. #SameSameButDifferentSoMustTry
Time to tuck in! MysteryLuck really cannot wait liao, especially when we need to take many different angles of our food before the real eating session start.
Why so Ulu? The truth reveals!
As Soi 19 continues to expand, food quality is always their biggest concern. In order to solve this, Soi 19 Serangoon is actually their central kitchen which will distribute the ingredients to the rest of the branches. This is actually a smart move as the rental fee there is not as high comparing to other prime spot. This outlet is basically their tactical HQ where they also provide most of their takeaway delivery services! Their takeaway delivery hotline is:
Say Hi to the Founder!
It is our honor to meet up with the founder, Mr Alan Ng as there are many things that we youngsters can learn from him!
True Entrepreneurial Spirit!
- Before Soi 19, he was actually in a apparel business in Thailand but due to a major flood in Thailand, he decided to close his business and dive into Singapore F&B industry which was an area new to him. Yet without being afraid of failing, he brought in Thai Wanton Noodles to Singapore and after years of grinding, this was his achievement. This is the real deal yeah, the true towkay! 👏👏👏
Constant Validation & Improvement
- In order to get the perfect recipe, Mr Ng tested many kinds of ingredients and condiments. He have tried over 20 different noodles before deciding on the noodle with the right texture. He also constantly get feedbacks from customers in order to improve his recipe. This is why Soi 19 Thai Wanton Noodles are so popular among Singaporeans as it is infused with localized flavor! 👍👍👍
Never Give Up Spirit!
- Mr Ng is now 63 years old and during his years in building this Soi 19 business, he survived the turmoil of cancer. Salute for your strong resilient! May you continue to stay strong and healthy!💪💪💪
Gamxiahamita Soi 19! 😭😭😭
Before we leave, we checked out the achievements of Soi 19 again and this is displayed from the inside.
Wah stunned! our NOTCHBAD post is in the middle! I joked to Jason (Mr Ng’s son-in-law and marketing guy):
Eh eh Jason, is it because you know we are coming. That’s why put our post in the middle! 😏😏😏
Jason also joked back:
Yah loh, I used velcro so can swap around! 😜😜😜 Haha, no lah, is 3M tape so is fixed there yeah!
Wahahahaha good one Jason for entertaining me. But actually hoh, we approved you to swap around for future strategic move or maybe fengshui lah! Got put our post up there, we are very honoured liao! Gamxiahamita!
Feedbacks to Soi 19
You see my blog post, you will know that I am very loh soh (naggy). So before we really left, I gathered all the feedback from the team and relayed to them. Here they are, if they are executed, you all must thank us hoh!
- Should use crushed ice for Thai Iced Milk Tea instead of ice cube, somehow the drinking experience is better when using crushed ice! 👍👍👍
- The noodles that day is a little bit too oily, maybe a less oily option available for customers. ✅✅✅
- Since it is labelled as restaurant, should provide tissue paper. No need those atas servlets, just those cheapo tissue paper will do or toilet paper like Nankron Kitchen! LOL! 😂😂😂
- To provide a full dining experience, Soi 19 can provide dessert options like mango sticky rice which we were quite disappointed that they dun have it there! 😖😖😖
Zhng your PC here!
Most gamers should be able to find Soi 19 easily in Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre. This is because it is right beside Computex Computer Services Pte Ltd which house the legendary zhng-your-PC (PC modification) master. If you want to ram up or build a ultimate gaming/multimedia PC, this is the place to go. Better than going to the notorious Sim Lim Square.
Wanna Repair Your Rolex or Precious Watches? Here’s the Place!
If you are a watch enthusiast, you might be familiar with the ‘Seo Choon’ brand name. This brand name started all the way from my late grandfather Lee Seo Choon, who is a famous watchmaker in the 60s and 70s. Because of his selflessness, he imparted all his skills to his kids and disciples. Now you can find their disciples doing very well in the watch industry under brand name like ‘Big Time’ and ‘Goh Seo Choon’.
In Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre, you can find Lee Seo Choon’s eldest son and grandson working hard to revive every old vintage yet precious timepieces. This shop is the place that I played around often when I was a kid. Truly nostalgic! In fact, this shop is sometimes used as wedding photoshoot location!
Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre – Standing the Test of Time
I am very elated to see Soi 19 opening their first restaurant in Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre. First, I love to see local businesses grow and building a brand of their own. Second, with more yummy foods opening in this retro complex, it will attract more crowds and hopefully revive its old bustling days just like how it was during my childhood days.
I shall stop here for now before I sound like a old grandfather reminiscing the good old days! My advice is:
- Check out this vintage building yeah! And if you are hungry, drop by Soi 19 Thai Wanton Noodle Restaurant for their yummy food! 👍👍👍
Thank you for reading all the way till here! Come, I clap for you! 😂😂😂
